TVAD Fees-Only PhD Bursary: Applications invited to start in September 2016

The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for a fees-only bursary for a full-time PhD to commence in September 2016. The bursary holder will work within TVAD, the Theorising Visual Art and Design Research Group, under the Research Group Leader, Dr Grace Lees-Maffei.

About TVAD

The TVAD Research Group is based in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire. TVAD is a trans-disciplinary research group working on relationships between text, narrative and image. Our work calls upon a range of methodologies to explore these relationships as they are played out within design, fine and applied arts, film, and digital and text-based media. TVAD has strengths in the histories of design and art, and out researchers also examine issues of historiography, methodology, epistemology and pedagogy. More information about TVAD is available on our website http://www.herts.ac.uk/research/ssahri/research-areas/art-design/tvad-theorising-visual-art-and-design and here on our blog http://tvad-uh.blogspot.co.uk/

Requirements

Normally candidates will have an Honours degree or equivalent and a relevant Masters Degree. Candidates without a Masters degree will need to demonstrate an equivalent level of accomplishment through professional practice. Candidates for whom English is not their first language will require certification of English language competence (minimum IELTS 6.5, preferably higher). At admission, candidates will be allocated a Principal and one or two Second Supervisors based on the research area they have set out in their research proposal and in their interviews. The supervisory team is chosen for its experience and expertise in the subject of the research.

Applicants complete an application form and a research proposal. Research proposals should address some aspect of the relationships between text, narrative and image, broadly understood. Students develop their topics and training according to individual needs and interests, and current developments in the field. The student will benefit from the University’s researcher development programme.

Fees for 2016/17 are £4600 per annum for home/EU students. The fees-only bursary is for three years, based on candidates satisfying an assessment panel of their progress.
